Welcome to this blog. It will inform you about the progress of designing and building live steam model locomotives. The blog contains the description of a model Würrtembergische T3 on 7¼" gauge (constructed between 2006 and 2017), the wagons for this loco (built between 2018 and 2022), and the current project a 5" gauge model of a Great Eastern Railway Y14 class loco (started in 2020)

Güterwagen Omk (part 10) brake levers and footrest

The next things to make were the levers that actually operate the brakes. These are two small (minimal unobtrusive) handles on each side of the wagon, below the doors. This way the brakes can be operated by a left of right handed driver.


An 8 mm rod is used to extend the levers under the side doors.



Some support plates keep the rod in position. Due to the lever construction, the maximum pulling  force is only small.  





Square ends were milled on the outer ends of the rod. The brake levers have a square hole filed in them.



 A M3 bolt and thick washer are locking the lever to the rod.

The hand operated brake almost completed. Some pins have to be turned to replace the temporary bolts. They will be turned from some nails. 



The footrests are made of 12 mm stainless steel. They are inserted in a 16mm tube, that is fixed to the main frame. A tiny pin will click in the grove and lock the footrest in to position.



They can be pushed inside the tube when not needed (when the wagon is on the steaming bay or in the car for transport to the track)...


... and pulled out when needed for driving the locomotive.  The footrest is 120 mm wide



A piece of leaf spring is used to hold the locking pin. 



The sitting position was tested and we decided to put the  seat box (from my 5" gauge driving wagon) on its side. This gives a lower position, and we think a better sight on the backhead of the locomotive while driving.



The small rounded end cap gives just enough grip to your shoes, so that you won't slide of when on the track.

Güterwagen Omk (part 9) brake rigging

I started with the brakes. These will be hand operated by the driver. By using some levers, only a small force (approx 4 kilogram max.) is needed, to generate a 40 kg (400N) brake force. This way only a small brake lever is needed, that will be situated under the side doors. It will be visible, but not as disturbing as a big brake handle, that otherwise would spoil the appearance of the model.








There are 8 stainless steel 3D-printed brake blocks that will grip all four wheels. The brake system itself is a close copy of the original, as used on the full sized wagon, but skipping the air brake cylinder.




A support frame for the brake hangers had to be made. I intended to use 20 x 10 mm steel bar, but decided to use U-profiled 1,5 mm steel instead. This is also strong (rigged) enough and is a lighter construction. The total weight of the wagon, according to Solidworks, will be about 30 kg.



The cross members were made from a square tube that was cut in half, and milled straight. 



At each end a corner plate is silver soldered, with which it will be screwed to the main frame.



Two small rivets kept the assembly in place, during soldering. 



A lot of parts for the brake hangers were lasercut from 2 mm steel. Alas the laser parameters were not optimal; so there was a lot of work to remove the burrs.



The Gressel HB 20 strip bending machine was put to use to bend rod for the triangle for the brake blocks. 





A relative heavy machine for bending such a small rod, but with the end stop, it was easy to bend them all to the same dimensions.



A groove was made with a ball nose end mill. This way they have good contact surface for soldering them to the cross bar. 



In a old vice they were soldered to the cross bar. 



A primitive, but workable set-up for soldering the connecting plate in the middle.

A lot of serie work had to be done. Working in batches can save some time. Most of the parts are therefore made for both wagons.

These supports are located at the end of the T-bars.  Even on this model they give some real support to the side boards of the wagon.



The one under the door, is the only one that has no connection with a T-bar. The visible open corner is therefore soldered, so it resembles the press formed part from the original.

On the real wagon the side boards were removable. The lower part of the T-bars is locked in position with this plate.



Next step: middle support frame



Some hangers needed to be changed; in my first design in Solidworks I didn't notice the importance of the size, but they were too long. The tie rods would interfere with the cross members. It was possible to alter them, so the CNC miller was put to use.     



Split pins are used to assemble the parts.
